Why I built ByUs
A letter from Evan Ryon, founder of ByUs, on fees, control and what creators really need.
I’m Evan, and I started ByUs because I kept watching creators get a raw deal. Here are the five reasons, and what ByUs does about each one.
Fees take too much
A fan once sent a creator friend of ours $500 in gifts, and only about $200 reached her. That stuck with me. On ByUs, that same $500 would pay her $435 to $455 as memberships or tips, or $350 as live gifts, with card processing included. The fee is shown up front.
Your audience should be yours
One rule change can cut a creator off from their audience overnight. On ByUs, earnings go straight to the creator’s own payout account, and their member list is theirs to download any time.
Your fans should actually see your posts
Algorithms decide who sees what. On ByUs, members get an email when a creator posts, unless they turn it off.
Someone should answer
Too often there’s nobody to talk to when something goes wrong. On ByUs, creators can message me directly from their dashboard. I usually reply within an hour, 5 AM to 9 PM Eastern.
Creators need more than a payment button
Getting paid is only the start. Creators need tools to grow and real ways to talk with their fans, so ByUs includes private messages, 1:1 video calls, polls, comments and a dashboard that suggests your next steps. And now there’s the Creator Lounge, where creators help each other.
ByUs is still young, and I’m building it with the creators who use it. If you have an idea, tell me.
